Healthy Eating and Lactation Support – MN EATS

The Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) aims for all people in Minnesota to experience an equitable, just, and nourishing food system that is responsive to change. 

SHIP Strategic Directions

  • Work in partnership with the community to assess and shape their food system
  • Strengthening connections to increase healthy and culturally appropriate food access
  • Work to build sustainable connections within local food systems that benefit consumers and producers

 Chisago County Healthy Eating Partnerships and Projects:

Chisago County SHIP partners with schools, workplaces, health care systems, community food partners and childcare centers to create healthy eating policies, programs, and activities. If you or your organization would like to discuss how Chisago County could support you, email [email protected] 


Chisago County works with school districts to increase access to more healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables, and decrease eating foods that have high levels of sodium, saturated fats and added sugar. Examples of evidence-based activities Chisago County helps with include: 

  • Reviewing and updating local wellness policies to match federal USDA Food and Nutrition regulations and standards for school meals
  • School fundraisers, healthy classrooms / parties, nutritious snacks during and outside of the school day
  • Weekend backpack food programs
  • Farm to school connections and training
  • Healthy vending, healthy beverage promotion
  • School based agriculture – gardening, food preparation

Previous school partnerships & projects:

  • Supported school district weekend backpack programs in partnership with Family Pathways
  • Hydration stations
  • Supported high school agriculture class with canning supplies to aid in students learning how to support healthy eating

 Community Sites:

  • SuperShelf Food Shelf transformation
  • Helping provide supportive spaces and places for lactation
  • Community Based Agriculture (community gardens)
  • Community food assessments and planning – identifying the food security needs of a community
  • Food and nutrition security – assisting with providing healthy food access throughout the county
  • Farmers Markets – promotion of market, implementing WIC and SNAP EBT acceptance
  • Healthy Food Retail

Previous community partnerships & projects:

  • SuperShelf transformation at Family Pathways North Branch Food Shelf – updates to space, shelving and signage, and training for volunteers and staff on stocking to provide a welcoming shopping experience for all
  • Expansion and growth of community gardens in Lindstrom, North Branch, and Rush City to allow for more opportunities to grow healthy foods
  • Partnered with Women’s Environmental Institute to expand production and grow VeggieRX programming
  • Updating signage for the Chisago City Farmer’s Market to increase visibility and grow attendance at the market for people of all ages
  • Hydration stations in parks
  • Chisago County Fair lactation stations


  • Breastfeeding Friendly Workplaces – updating and implementing lactation policies and developing supportive spaces and places
  • Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
  • Workplace gardens
  • Supporting healthy food and beverage options and access in vending, cafeterias, and snack stations

Previous workplace partnerships & projects:

  • Promoted healthy eating fridge options for staff to utilize during breaks and increase access to affordable and healthy foods
  • Assisted with development and implementation of lactation policies for workplaces
  • Updated lactation spaces for employees to create a secure, clean, and welcoming environment


  • Food Rx– working with healthcare systems and community partners to help families with food insecurity
  • Baby Café – supporting lactation support in the community
  • Supporting students with chronic conditions such as oral health, food allergies, disordered eating, pre / diabetes
