Formally the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the United States. They are committed to improving crisis services and advancing suicide prevention by empowering individuals, advancing professional best practices, and building awareness.
988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. This new, shorter phone number will make it easier for people to remember and access mental health crisis services (Please note, the previous 1-800-273-TALK (8255) number will continue to function indefinitely.

Minnesota's suicide prevention and mental health crisis texting services are now available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. People who text MN to 741741 will be connected to Crisis Text Line. Crisis Text Line handles 50,000 messages per month and over 20 million messages since 2013 from across the U.S., connecting people to local resources in their community. For callers who are the most in distress, average wait times for a response is only 39 seconds.
