1. Who is eligible?

Dental varnish is free to Medical Assistance (MA) and MinnesotaCares (MNCare) participants and based on a sliding fee scale for others ($0-15 based on family size and gross income).

Dental varnishing is available to children from the time the 1st tooth erupts (6 months) to 18 years of age.

3. What is fluoride varnish?

Fluoride varnish is a protective coating that is painted on the surfaces of teeth to prevent new cavities from forming and to help stop cavities that have already started.

4. What does fluoride varnish do?

Fluoride varnish strengthens a child's teeth. The stronger the teeth are, the less chance that the child will get cavities.

5. Is fluoride varnish safe?

Yes, fluoride varnish can be used on baby's teeth. It's safe because it adheres to the teeth and only a small amount of fluoride varnish is needed, so the risk of ingestion is lower.

6. How is fluoride varnish put on the teeth?

The varnish is painted on the teeth (just like nail polish on nails). The varnish does not taste bad and can be applied quickly and easily. Application is not painful. The child's teeth may yellow after the fluoride varnish is painted on; the teeth should not be brushed until the next day. The discoloration will disappear the following day.

7. How long does the effect of the fluoride varnish last?

The protective effect of the fluoride varnish will continue to work for several months.

8. How is fluoride varnish different from a sealant?

The sealant is used only on permanent teeth and a persons chewing surface. Fluoride varnish is a protective coat on "baby" teeth and permanent teeth and covers the entire tooth surface.
